Dear Diary,
It all began Memorial Day weekend when my love and I decided to skip away from the lively city of Seattle. We made our way to the San Juan Islands…not of South of America, though — of Washington state. Yep, believe it or not, there are islands in Washington state named San Juan Islands. If youβre a local Washingtonian, some of you may have found yourself here before. For others, perhaps this could be an introduction to the beauty of these islands in Northern Washington and a future get away destination.
Memorial Day was just around the corner and it was decided that we would venture to the islands to celebrate the weekend and have a romantic getaway. For us, the explorer inside of us felt eager for what was to come… We were researching online ideas and places to explore in the northern Washington town and could not wait until we arrived to our final destination in San Juan Island.
First, we began our voyage with a Washington State Ferry ride from the port of Anacortes. Our reservations were made in advance to ensure our trip was confirmed. That way, we also had a chance to fast track through pre-paid lines of cars through the ferry system.
Once we parted the Port of Anacortes, we explored the upper and lower deck of the ferry. Families and friends crowded the sunny decks as we sailed away.

Our first stop right off the ferry was in the town of Friday Harbor. We found ourselves a resting station at Salty Fox Cafe overlooking the historic Cannary Landing!

Once we fueled up with a snack and coffee, it was time to travel across the island by car driving approximately 10 miles away from Friday Harbor, to Roche Harbor. Roche Harbor is its own unique resort town nestled away from the initial port of entry!
Through our cruise of the island, the sights and landscape were sure appealing. Especially that of which were covered with such varied landscapes: valleys, forests, farms, and vineyards. There were also small marinas scattered throughout. This place was really fascinating. It was a magnificent sight, all of it. And then we stumbled upon the extensively built historic town of Roche Harbor where we stayed the night at Hotel De Haro.

Roche Harbor Resort is a village style resort built upon the historically developed Lime stone mill from 1900βs. The architecture and style of the town is of the Victorian era.

We had such an incredible time exploring about and can hardly wait to return to the San Juan Island.
Here are a few recommendations for you as a traveler of the area:
- Book your ferry reservations in advance
- Walk around Front Street in Friday Harbor to see boutiques and shops
- Drive through the countryside and stop at a vineyard for local wine tasing
- Stay at the Roche Harbor Resort to the experience the unique part of history of San Juan Islandβs history
- Stop by marinas to capture the essence of the island culture.. even get in the water and play if you dare!
- Have some fresh oysters harvested in the bay
- Attend the Roche Harbor Resort Flag Raising Ceremony at sunset
- Soak in the seaside scenery

There were too many moments I will forever cherish about our time at San Juan Island. Iβll be coming back again to discover more… until then friends…
Bon voyage
