Dear Diary,
In addition to watching Hallmark Channel’s Christmas in July Special on TV, this is also how I am celebrating my Christmas in July — with plentiful gifts of berries from Pacific Northwest farms I’ve visited. Although I missed the window for harvesting strawberries this year, I did however find the chance to wander through fields of blueberries and raspberries to gather some of my own. Yaay & yummm! I’m so thankful for these sweet little berries.
Over all, it was such a fun event. With temperatures nearing 80 degrees, I stayed cool beneath bushes for shade and hydrated by eating these fruits as I picked them. Picking berries reminded me of being home in Unalaska and where my mother and dear sisters would gather salmon berries and blueberries in the tundra. Except, back home the seasons for harvesting are spread out more, unlike here in Washington where I was able to pick blueberries and raspberries on the same day.
Before the berry picking journey, I had a challenging time finding a farm. Every farm I called had unique “U-Pick” hours and/or required an appointment in advance before stopping by due to current pandemic restrictions. One piece of advice I’d give is check, check, check the farm hours of operation before you go. After several phone calls, I finally found a couple places. I am thankful we were able to quickly find our way to Remlinger Farms for raspberries and Higher Taste Farm for blueberries. At these two locations, we were not required to have appointments prior to arrival, which really made our trips hassle free.

‘Twas a Berry Merry Christmas in July for me. I can hardly wait to do it again next year. Something else I do anticipate though, is another berry picking session in the coming weeks…!
